Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (2): Afghanistan's formal trade agreements are minimal amid its current isolation, with cross-border trade to Pakistan, Iran, and Central Asia continuing informally; India's engagement is largely humanitarian aid and wheat shipments rather than any FTA.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~28 destinations. One of the world's weakest passports; visa required for almost everywhere.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders require an advance visa through the limited Afghan diplomatic channels currently operating, and current travel advisories strongly discourage tourism; other nationalities face similarly restrictive and case-by-case visa processes.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Shared taxis and private hired cars with drivers are the standard way to get around Kabul and between cities, as public transit infrastructure remains basic.

Car vs taxi: Hired vehicles with trusted local drivers are the only practical option; self-driving or unfamiliar taxis are not advisable given security and infrastructure conditions.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Afghan afghani is the local currency; US dollars are widely used and often preferred for larger transactions, and cash is essential since card payments and ATMs are extremely limited.

SIM & data: Afghan Wireless, Roshan (now part of MTN Afghanistan), and Etisalat Afghanistan provide coverage in major cities; SIM registration requires a passport and connectivity is inconsistent outside urban centers.

Tipping: Not a strong tradition, but small tips for guides, drivers, or hotel staff are appreciated where services are used.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Dress conservatively and modestly at all times, women travelers should cover hair in public, and always ask before photographing people, especially women.

Food: Kabuli pulao (rice with lamb, carrots, and raisins), mantu dumplings, and fresh naan from local bakeries are staples of Afghan cuisine.

Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Security conditions remain serious and unpredictable across much of the country; most governments advise against all travel, and any visit requires careful, informed planning and local guidance.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Taliban governance since 2021 has made nomad/remote work extremely difficult; infrastructure is unreliable; travel is inadvisable for most foreigners.

Education: International education options extremely limited; security and access remain major constraints.

Healthcare: Healthcare infrastructure severely damaged; private care limited to Kabul; serious cases often require evacuation.
