Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (5): An EAEU founding member alongside Russia, so a concluded India–EAEU FTA (talks progressing in 2026) would extend to Minsk; for now trade runs on MFN terms, with heavy EU/US sanctions steering commerce toward Russia, China and the CIS.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~80 destinations. Eastern Bloc passport; limited international visa-free access due to political isolation.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa arranged in advance through the Belarusian Embassy in New Delhi — the airport visa-free scheme mainly covers European nationals, not India. Fly into Minsk rather than crossing by land from Russia, where third-country transit rules are fiddly; verify the latest Russia–Belarus visa-recognition arrangements.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

The Minsk Metro (three lines, token-cheap) plus trolleybuses and marshrutka minibuses cover the capital, while Belarusian Railways (BCh) runs tidy trains to Brest and Grodno. Yandex Go handles ride-hailing.

Car vs taxi: Yandex Go taxis are so cheap that driving is pointless in Minsk; intercity, the M1 motorway bills foreign cars via the BelToll electronic system. Trains and buses cover most itineraries comfortably.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Belarusian rubles (BYN) — and note foreign Visa/Mastercard are unreliable because of sanctions, so bring EUR or USD cash to exchange at banks. Keep your exchange receipts.

SIM & data: A1, MTS and life:) sell cheap prepaid SIMs with passport registration at brand stores. Pick one up at Minsk airport or a city mall — data is inexpensive.

Tipping: 5–10% in Minsk cafés and restaurants, in cash; some upscale places add a service line. Rounding up is fine for taxis.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Russian is the street language; greetings are formal, shoes come off in homes, and flowers are given in odd numbers. Avoid political conversations with strangers — genuinely.

Food: Draniki (potato pancakes with sour cream) are the national staple, alongside machanka pork stew and kalduny dumplings; wash it down with kvass or a local Alivaria beer.

Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Street crime is low and Minsk is famously orderly, but the political climate is strict: never photograph government buildings or police, avoid any gathering, and check advisories — several governments discourage travel.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Minsk has a tech hub with coworking spaces and IT culture; affordable living but visa and political concerns limit nomad flows.

Education: Very affordable education; international schools minimal outside Minsk.

Healthcare: Extremely affordable public healthcare; private clinics offer good value.
