Caribbean reef, cayes and jungle ruins
Trade agreements (7): A CARICOM/CSME member covered by the CARIFORUM–EU and CARIFORUM–UK Economic Partnership Agreements, plus a partial-scope deal with Guatemala. No India FTA — trade with India is minimal, mainly inbound pharmaceuticals and vehicles.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~136 destinations. Caribbean & Central American access; English advantage in Commonwealth countries.
India × Belize hub ↗ All countries factsheet
Indian passport holders need a Belize visa unless holding a valid multiple-entry US visa, which permits entry for about 30 days (extendable, small fee may apply) — confirm before flying. US, UK, EU and CARICOM nationals get 30 days visa-free, extendable monthly.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Old American school buses ply the George Price and Hummingbird Highways for a few dollars; San Pedro Belize Express and Ocean Ferry water taxis link Belize City with Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, while Tropic Air and Maya Island Air hop between airstrips.
Car vs taxi: A rental 4x4 shines for San Ignacio's Maya sites and the waterfalls off the Hummingbird Highway; green-plate taxis are unmetered, so agree fares first. On Caye Caulker and San Pedro it's all golf carts, bikes and water taxis.
Money: The Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar and USD is accepted everywhere — always clarify which 'dollar' a quoted price means. Cards work in tourist zones; carry cash inland.
SIM & data: DigiCell (Belize Telemedia) is the main prepaid option, sold at the airport and corner shops, with reasonable coverage out to the cayes. Data costs more than the regional norm.
Tipping: 10–15% where no service charge appears; many jungle lodges add 10% automatically. Tip dive and cave-tubing guides in Belize or US dollars.
Etiquette: English is official — unique in Central America — with Kriol the lingua franca; Caye Caulker's motto 'Go Slow' is meant literally. Greet people when entering shops and never rush a transaction.
Food: Rice and beans with stew chicken is the everyday plate, always with Marie Sharp's habanero sauce on the table; add fry jacks at breakfast, conch ceviche in season (October–June) and Garífuna hudut in Hopkins.
Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Belize City's Southside has gang crime that rarely touches visitors, but skip wandering there after dark; San Ignacio, Placencia and the cayes are relaxed. Respect reef currents and boat-safety basics.
For nomads: Small but stable nomad hub in Belize City and Caye Caulker; English-speaking advantage; affordable living.
Education: English-medium education available; costs moderate for Central America.
Healthcare: Reasonable healthcare costs; private clinics in Belize City provide good services.
