Santiago sits so close to the Andes that some mornings the peaks seemed to lean right over the rooftops, snow still catching first light while the city below stayed in shadow. I rode the funicular up San Cristóbal with a couple celebrating an anniversary, their nervous joy contagious even to a solo traveler.
