Getting around

Caribe Tours and Metro run excellent air-conditioned coaches nationwide; Santo Domingo boasts the Caribbean's first metro (two lines) plus a teleférico cable car, with guagua minibuses filling the gaps. Uber works in Santo Domingo and Santiago.

Car vs taxi: The DR has among the world's highest road-death rates, so lean on Caribe Tours coaches and Uber; in Punta Cana use hotel transfers or registered taxis at fixed (pricey) rates. Rent a car only for relaxed corners like the Samaná Peninsula.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Dominican pesos — keep some for colmados and guaguas, though resorts quote in USD. Uber and card payments cut down cash needs in the capital.

SIM & data: Claro has the widest coverage, with Altice and Viva competing on price; prepaid SIMs are sold at Las Américas (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ) airports against your passport.

Tipping: A 10% service charge is added to restaurant bills by law; leaving roughly another 10% in cash for good service is customary. Tip resort staff a dollar or two per service.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Dominicans dress sharply — beachwear stays at the beach; open every exchange with 'buenas'. Expect merengue and bachata at full volume, and treat dominoes as the serious business it is.

Food: La bandera (rice, beans and stewed meat) is lunch nationwide; mangú with 'los tres golpes' (fried cheese, salami and eggs) rules breakfast, sancocho is the celebration stew, and mamajuana the after-dinner ritual — with an ice-cold Presidente.

Say hello: Spanish — “Hola” · thanks “Gracias” · how much? “¿Cuánto cuesta?”

Safety & emergency

Resort zones like Punta Cana and Bayahíbe are well-secured; in cities watch for motorbike phone-snatching and use Uber after dark. Statistically, road accidents — especially moto-taxis — are the biggest real risk.
