Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (10): CAFTA-DR with the US is the backbone, alongside Central American integration and deals with Mexico, Chile and Colombia; full dollarisation simplifies trade. No India FTA — Indian generics and motorcycles arrive at standard tariffs.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~132 destinations. Central American regional primary access.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa unless carrying a valid multiple-entry US visa, in which case entry is granted with a US$12 tourist card on arrival (90 days within the CA-4 zone). US, EU, UK and many other nationals enter visa-free for 90 days.

Getting around

Legendary painted 'chicken buses' reach every town for under a dollar, and Uber works well in San Salvador and out to the beaches. The gateway is Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International (SAL).

Car vs taxi: With security transformed, self-driving this small country (Ruta de las Flores, the surf coast) is now genuinely pleasant; otherwise Uber rules the capital and buses cost pennies. Agree fares before boarding ordinary taxis.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The US dollar is legal tender, so no exchange needed if you carry USD — small bills are gold. Bitcoin, adopted in 2021, became voluntary for businesses after the 2025 IMF-linked reforms, so don't count on paying with it.

SIM & data: Tigo and Claro prepaid SIMs are cheap, sold at malls and the airport against your passport. Coverage along the surf coast and Ruta de las Flores is solid.

Tipping: A 10% propina is often added to restaurant bills; hand over a dollar or two extra for good service. Tip surf instructors and guides in cash.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greet with 'buenos días' and eat pupusas with your hands — asking for cutlery marks you as a tourist. In surf towns like El Zonte and El Tunco, respect the local lineup.

Food: Pupusas — griddled corn cakes stuffed with cheese, beans or chicharrón, topped with curtido slaw — are the national dish, with Olocuilta a famous pilgrimage stop; try yuca frita and horchata de morro too.

Say hello: Spanish — “Hola” · thanks “Gracias” · how much? “¿Cuánto cuesta?”

Safety & emergency

The security turnaround since the 2022 state of exception is dramatic — homicides have fallen to among the region's lowest and visitors move freely. Take normal precautions and respect the strong Pacific rip currents.
