Art-deco Asmara and an untouched Red Sea coast
Trade agreements (2): Eritrea has limited trade integration, participating in AfCFTA and only loosely engaging with COMESA; there is no India–Eritrea FTA and bilateral trade remains minimal.

Indian passport holders need to obtain a visa in advance through the Eritrean embassy, as there is no e-visa or visa-on-arrival option, and approval processes can be slow and require sponsorship or an invitation letter.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Shared taxis and a limited bus network serve Asmara and connect it to towns like Massawa and Keren; the historic Asmara–Massawa railway operates mainly for tourist excursions rather than regular transport, and app-based taxis do not exist.
Car vs taxi: Independent self-driving is not practical due to permit requirements and restricted zones; visitors typically travel with a government-approved guide and driver for any trips outside Asmara.
Money: Eritrea is very much a cash economy with the nakfa used for almost all transactions; card acceptance is essentially nonexistent and ATMs are unreliable for foreign cards, so visitors should carry sufficient cash, often in euros or dollars, from entry.
SIM & data: Eritel (Eritrea Telecommunication Services Corporation) is the sole state-run operator, providing limited and often slow connectivity even in Asmara; visitors should not expect reliable mobile data and eSIMs are not supported.
Tipping: Not deeply established, but small tips for restaurant service and guides in Asmara are appreciated and rounding up taxi fares is fine.
Etiquette: Coffee ceremonies are a deeply important social ritual, so accepting an invitation to share coffee is a meaningful gesture of hospitality, and modest dress is appropriate throughout the country.
Food: Try tsebhi (spiced meat or lentil stew) served on injera flatbread, closely related to Ethiopian cuisine; bottled water is strongly recommended over tap water.
Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Eritrea is tightly controlled with heavy restrictions on movement and photography, and while violent crime against tourists is rare, travel requires permits for many regions and independent travel is significantly curtailed by the government.
For nomads: Not a nomad destination — heavily restricted travel, permits for movement and very limited internet.
Education: Tigrinya and Arabic systems; limited international options.
Healthcare: Basic healthcare available; serious cases require travel.
