Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (5): Ethiopia is a signatory to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and a member of COMESA and IGAD, and only joined the WTO process recently. It has no bilateral FTA with India, though India is a major trade and investment partner.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~48 destinations. Weaker; IGAD & COMESA.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa but can use Ethiopia's convenient e-Visa, applied for online before travel (single-entry tourist visas typically 30 or 90 days). Most other nationalities also use the e-Visa or visa-on-arrival at Addis Ababa's Bole Airport.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Intercity travel is by Selam Bus and Sky Bus coaches or the Chinese-built Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway; within Addis Ababa use the light rail, blue-and-white minibus taxis, and the ride-hailing apps Feres and RIDE.

Car vs taxi: Self-driving is not recommended given chaotic city traffic, informal rules and rough rural roads; hire a car with a local driver for long trips and use RIDE or Feres app taxis in Addis Ababa.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Ethiopia is heavily cash-based in birr; cards are accepted only at upmarket hotels in Addis Ababa, ATMs can run dry, and telebirr mobile money is widely used by locals. Carry cash and note that the birr is a tightly controlled currency.

SIM & data: Ethio Telecom is the dominant carrier alongside the newer Safaricom Ethiopia; buy a SIM at Bole Airport or a branded shop with your passport. eSIM support is limited, so travellers often rely on a physical local SIM or a regional eSIM like Airalo.

Tipping: Tipping (locally called 'gursha' in spirit, but simply a service extra) is customary but modest: round up or leave 10% at restaurants, and a few birr for hotel porters and parking guards.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Meals are shared from a communal injera platter and eaten with the right hand; feeding a morsel to a companion ('gursha') is a warm gesture. Remove shoes when entering a home and use both hands or the right hand to give and receive.

Food: Try injera with spicy doro wat (chicken stew), tibs, and kitfo, and pause for a traditional coffee ceremony. Drink bottled or filtered water and avoid tap water and ice.

Say hello: Amharic — “Selam” · thanks “Ameseginalehu” · how much? “Sinት new?”

Safety & emergency

Addis Ababa and the main tourist circuit are generally safe for everyday travel, with petty theft the main concern; however, regional conflict and instability affect areas like Tigray, Amhara and parts of Oromia, so check current advisories and avoid border zones.
