Getting around

Tbilisi has a two-line metro (buy a MetroMoney card), plus buses, minibus marshrutkas and the Bolt ride-hailing app; marshrutkas link Tbilisi with Kazbegi, Batumi and the wine country.

Car vs taxi: Renting a car (or a driver) is great for the Georgian Military Highway and Kakheti wine region; within Tbilisi, the Bolt app is cheap and easier than negotiating with taxis.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Georgian lari (GEL) is the currency; cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and Batumi, but carry cash for marshrutkas, rural guesthouses and mountain villages.

SIM & data: Magti, Geocell (part of Silknet) and Cellfie offer cheap tourist SIMs available at Tbilisi Airport and in shops with your passport; data is inexpensive.

Tipping: Tipping is becoming common in Tbilisi; a service charge of 10 to 15 percent is often added, otherwise leaving around 10 percent is a kind gesture.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Georgians are famously hospitable; if invited to a supra (feast), respect the tamada (toastmaster) and pace yourself with wine and chacha, and dress modestly when visiting Orthodox churches.

Food: Try khachapuri (especially the boat-shaped Adjaruli), khinkali dumplings, lobio bean stew, and mtsvadi grilled meat, paired with Georgian qvevri wines.

Say hello: Georgian — “Gamarjoba” · thanks “Madloba” · how much? “Ra ghirs?”

Safety & emergency

Georgia is very safe for travellers with low crime; mountain roads and weather in Kazbegi and Svaneti are the main risks, and avoid the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
