The journal

My uncle took me to Old Delhi before dawn, when the alleys still belonged to sweepers and stray dogs rather than the crowds. We ate jalebi standing up, syrup dripping onto newspaper, while he told stories about a city he'd left forty years earlier. It felt like inheriting a memory that wasn't quite mine.
