Indian passport holders need a visa; Côte d'Ivoire offers an e-Visa that is pre-approved online and finalised on arrival at Abidjan Airport for many nationalities, so apply before travel. Confirm current requirements ahead of time.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Intercity travel uses coaches (UTB, SOTRA services and others) and shared taxis, plus the Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway; within Abidjan use SOTRA buses and lagoon ferry-buses (bateaux-bus), orange metered taxis, and the Yango app, with a new metro under construction.
Car vs taxi: In Abidjan, Yango and orange taxis are convenient and avoid haggling; self-driving is possible on the main highways but city traffic and informal driving make app taxis or a hired driver the easier choice for most visitors.
Money: The West African CFA franc (pegged to the euro) is used for cash and is essential in markets and for taxis; cards work at hotels, city supermarkets and larger restaurants in Abidjan, and Orange Money and MTN MoMo are widely used. Carry cash for daily needs.
SIM & data: Orange, MTN and Moov are the carriers; buy a registered SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. Local eSIM support is limited, so a travel eSIM is a useful backup.
Tipping: Tipping is customary but modest; leave around 5–10% at restaurants without a service charge and tip porters, drivers and guides small amounts in CFA francs.
Etiquette: Greetings in French are important and unhurried, and a handshake is standard. Use the right hand for giving and receiving, dress smartly in Abidjan where appearance matters, and show respect to elders.
Food: Try attiéké (fermented cassava couscous) with grilled fish, kedjenou (slow-cooked chicken), and alloco (fried plantain). Drink bottled or sachet water rather than tap water.
Say hello: French — “Bonjour” · thanks “Merci” · how much? “C'est combien?”
Côte d'Ivoire has stabilised and Abidjan is a lively, largely safe hub with the usual petty-crime caution; be more careful in the far north near the Burkina Faso and Mali borders and avoid isolated areas at night.
For nomads: Abidjan is a leading Francophone West-African tech hub with strong coworking and internet.
Education: French-based system with growing international schools.
Healthcare: Private care in Abidjan decent; public system limited.
