Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (8): Trades through CARICOM's single market (CSME) and the CARIFORUM–EU and CARIFORUM–UK Economic Partnership Agreements. No India FTA, though the indenture-era Indian diaspora underpins warm ties; Indian pharma and vehicles enter at MFN rates.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~145 destinations. Strong Caribbean & Commonwealth access; global reach moderate.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders get visa-free tourist entry to Jamaica for short stays (up to 30 days is typically granted — carry onward tickets and accommodation proof). US, UK, Canadian and most European nationals get up to 90–180 days visa-free.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

The Knutsford Express coach is the comfortable, reliable way between Kingston, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril; licensed red-plate route taxis and JUTC buses in Kingston handle local runs.

Car vs taxi: Driving is on the left with famously assertive overtaking on the A1 and A3 — most visitors fare better with Knutsford Express plus licensed taxis, fares agreed in advance (no meters). Rent a car mainly for the mellow South Coast around Treasure Beach.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Jamaican dollars for patty shops and route taxis, US dollars widely accepted at resorts — carry both. Use ATMs inside banks or malls.

SIM & data: Digicel and Flow sell prepaid SIMs at Sangster (MBJ) and Norman Manley airports, with top-ups at any corner shop. Digicel's edge shows in the hills and countryside.

Tipping: 10–15% where service isn't already added; note some all-inclusives (Sandals, Beaches) prohibit staff tipping outside spas and butlers. Round up for route-taxi drivers.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greetings open every interaction ('Wah gwaan' among friends); dress smartly for churches and offices. Ganja is decriminalised in small amounts, but public smoking still draws fines — a classic tourist misstep.

Food: Jerk chicken and pork from Boston Bay (its birthplace) or Scotchies, ackee and saltfish — the national dish — patties from Juici or Tastee, and festival dumplings; finish with Blue Mountain coffee and Devon House ice cream.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Violence concentrates in specific Kingston and Montego Bay communities that visitors have no reason to enter; resort corridors and the north coast are well-policed. Use licensed JUTA or red-plate taxis at night and heed any state-of-emergency notices.

Education: Decent education options; international schools more expensive than regional average.

Healthcare: Moderate healthcare costs; private options available at reasonable rates.
