The journal

The old town smelled of cardamom and diesel in equal measure, its coral-stone buildings carved with Swahili doors older than any structure I'd grown up around. I ate grilled octopus at a beachfront stall in Nyali as the muezzin's call overlapped with reggae from a nearby bar, and neither seemed out of place.
