The journal

Nairobi surprised me with its ordinariness in the best sense — matatus honking past office towers, a Maasai market tucked behind a shopping mall. I had coffee with a local journalist who told me the city's real character lives in its estates, not its safari-lodge reputation, and I believed her by the second cup.
