Getting around

Kuwait has no metro or rail, so travel is by car; taxis and the Careem app are the main options, and the city is highly car-oriented with heavy traffic.

Car vs taxi: With no public transit, a rental car offers freedom, but traffic and parking are demanding; the Careem app is a stress-free alternative for getting around Kuwait City.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) is the world's highest-valued currency, divided into 1000 fils; cards are widely accepted, but carry cash for souqs and small vendors.

SIM & data: Buy a Zain, Ooredoo or STC (Viva) SIM at Kuwait International Airport or in malls with your passport (Civil ID for residents); data bundles are competitively priced.

Tipping: Tipping is not obligatory; a service charge may be added, otherwise rounding up or leaving around 10 percent is a nice gesture, plus small tips for valets and porters.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Dress conservatively in public, respect Islamic customs and Ramadan fasting (no public eating or drinking in daytime), and note that alcohol is strictly prohibited.

Food: Machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish) is the national dish; also try mutabbaq samak, harees, gers ogaily cake, and the ubiquitous Arabic coffee with dates.

Say hello: Arabic — “As-salamu alaykum” · thanks “Shukran” · how much? “Bikam?”

Safety & emergency

Kuwait is safe with low crime; the main challenges are extreme summer heat and aggressive traffic, and travellers should respect strict local laws.
