Getting around

Shared marshrutka minibuses and city buses cover Bishkek cheaply, while shared taxis and CIP Taxi or Namba Taxi apps handle longer hops to Issyk-Kul and the mountains.

Car vs taxi: Taxis and ride apps are inexpensive and practical for Bishkek; renting a 4x4 with a driver is the better choice for mountain routes given poor signage and rough roads.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Kyrgyzstani som is the currency; US dollars are widely accepted for exchange in Bishkek, and ATMs are common in cities but scarce in rural Tien Shan areas, so carry cash for trekking regions.

SIM & data: Beeline, MegaCom, and O! are the main operators; a tourist SIM with data is cheap and easy to buy at Manas International Airport or Bishkek kiosks with just your passport.

Tipping: Not traditionally expected, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% in Bishkek restaurants is increasingly common and appreciated.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Remove shoes when entering a home or yurt, accept tea and bread with your right hand, and never place bread upside down as it's considered disrespectful in Kyrgyz culture.

Food: Try beshbarmak (boiled meat over noodles), plov, and fermented mare's milk called kumis, especially at summer yurt camps around Song-Kul and Issyk-Kul lakes.

Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Generally safe for travelers, with petty crime the main concern in Bishkek markets; mountain regions require care around altitude and weather rather than crime.

Education: Low-cost education with growing international school options in Bishkek.

Healthcare: Healthcare is very affordable but quality and equipment vary; private clinics in capital are better.
