Alpine micro-principality on the Rhine
Trade agreements (30): An EFTA member — the India–EFTA TEPA is in force, giving Liechtenstein tariff-preferential access to India and a share in EFTA's USD 100 billion investment commitment; it also enjoys EFTA's ~30 FTAs plus full EU market access through the EEA.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~182 destinations. Microstate passport; Schengen member with global mobility.
India × Liechtenstein hub ↗ All countries factsheet
A Schengen member: Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa (90/180 rule), with Switzerland handling Liechtenstein's visa services abroad. Visa-free Schengen nationals enter freely — most arrive via Zurich since there is no airport.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
No airport and no station in Vaduz — arrive via Zurich, train to Sargans or Buchs SG, then ride the lime-green LIEmobil buses that thread the entire 25-km country. Feldkirch in Austria is the other rail gateway.
Car vs taxi: LIEmobil buses are cheap, punctual and reach every village, so a car is optional; taxis are scarce and expensive. Rent only if combining Swiss–Austrian alpine touring or heading up to Malbun in winter.
Money: Swiss francs; euros are often accepted but at poor rates. Cards work everywhere and prices are firmly Swiss-level.
SIM & data: Liechtenstein is in the EEA, so EU SIMs roam at domestic rates here — unlike in neighbouring Switzerland, a handy quirk. Local operators include FL1 and Salt Liechtenstein, with Swiss networks spilling over the Rhine.
Tipping: Swiss-style: service is included, so simply round up or add a few francs for good service. Nobody will chase you for more.
Etiquette: Greet with a casual 'Hoi' or a polite 'Grüss Gott'; punctuality and quiet evenings are the norm. Say hello when entering small shops in Vaduz or Triesenberg.
Food: Order Käsknöpfle — cheese spätzle with applesauce and crispy onions — and Ribel cornmeal; then taste wines from the Prince of Liechtenstein's own Hofkellerei winery in Vaduz.
Say hello: German — “Hallo” · thanks “Danke” · how much? “Wie viel?”
Among the safest countries on earth, with near-zero crime. The only real risks are alpine weather on hikes above Malbun.
For nomads: Vaduz attracts wealthy professionals and remote workers; excellent internet but very high cost of living.
Education: Expensive education system; many choose Swiss or Austrian schools nearby.
Healthcare: Premium Alpine healthcare comparable to Switzerland; among Europe's highest costs.
A Schengen member: Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa (90/180 rule), with Switzerland handling Liechtenstein's visa services abroad. Visa-free Schengen nationals enter freely — most arrive via Zurich since there is no airport.
Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc (CHF). Capital: Vaduz.
