Fortress capital and castle-dotted valleys
Trade agreements (45): As an EU member Luxembourg trades under the EU's ~45 agreements — including the India–EU FTA concluded on 27 January 2026 (now ratifying), a direct boost given the Luxembourg Stock Exchange already lists many Indian masala and green bonds.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~189 destinations. EU member with global visa-free access.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa (90 days in any 180 across the zone), applied for via Luxembourg's VFS route or covered by another Schengen state's visa. EU/EEA citizens move freely; US, UK and many others get 90 days visa-free.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
All public transport — trams, buses and second-class trains — has been completely free nationwide since 2020, a world first. The Luxembourg City tram links the Gare, the old town and the Kirchberg EU quarter.
Car vs taxi: With nationwide free public transport there is little reason to drive, and taxis are notoriously expensive. Rent a car only for castle-hopping in the Ardennes or touring Moselle vineyards.
Money: Euro, with cards and contactless accepted virtually everywhere; ATMs are plentiful. Budget generously — it is one of Europe's priciest capitals.
SIM & data: POST Luxembourg, Orange and Tango sell prepaid SIMs, and any EU SIM roams here at domestic rates. Coverage is excellent across the whole country.
Tipping: Service is included by law, so tipping is optional — rounding up or adding 5–10% for good service is the norm. Card terminals rarely prompt for tips.
Etiquette: Greet with 'Moien' — locals flip effortlessly between Luxembourgish, French and German. Punctuality is prized, and Sundays are quiet with most shops closed.
Food: Order Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork collar with broad beans), Gromperekichelcher potato fritters at markets and Bouneschlupp bean soup, with a glass of Moselle Crémant. The city packs a surprising density of Michelin stars.
Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
One of Europe's safest capitals; just mind your bag around the Gare district late at night. Mullerthal hiking trails are well marked and benign.
For nomads: Luxembourg City attracts expat professionals and remote workers with high salaries, but high cost of living.
Education: Among Europe's most expensive; international schools and universities command premium fees.
Healthcare: Excellent healthcare system; costs among Europe's highest for private services.
