Trade agreements (4): Madagascar is part of SADC, COMESA, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and a signatory to the AfCFTA. There is no India-specific FTA, though India engages the island through Indian Ocean regional cooperation.

Indian passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Antananarivo (Ivato) Airport, or apply via the e-Visa, for stays up to 30, 60 or 90 days; most nationalities also use visa-on-arrival. A small fee applies.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Intercity travel is dominated by shared 'taxi-brousse' minibuses (some premium services on main routes) as roads are slow and long; within Antananarivo use taxis (agree the fare) and the local ride apps where available, plus 'pousse-pousse' rickshaws in some towns.
Car vs taxi: Self-driving is not recommended given poor roads, weak signage and long distances; hire a 4x4 with an experienced local driver for touring and use agreed-fare taxis in the capital.
Money: Madagascar is very cash-based in ariary; cards work only at upmarket hotels in the capital, ATMs are limited outside cities, and mobile money (Mvola, Orange Money) is common locally. Carry plenty of cash for rural travel.
SIM & data: Telma, Orange and Airtel are the carriers, with Telma having strong coverage; buy a registered SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. eSIM availability is limited, so a travel eSIM helps on arrival.
Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but modest; leave around 5–10% at restaurants, round up for guides and drivers, and tip national-park guides, which supports local livelihoods.
Etiquette: Local customs ('fady' taboos) vary by region and can govern places, foods and behaviour, so ask and respect them, especially near tombs. Greetings are gentle and unhurried, and use the right hand for giving and receiving.
Food: Try romazava (beef-and-greens stew), ravitoto with pork, and the national staple of rice at nearly every meal, plus fresh zebu and seafood on the coast. Drink bottled or treated water and avoid tap water.
Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Madagascar is warm and welcoming but poor, so petty theft and after-dark robbery occur in cities like Antananarivo; travel is generally safe with sensible precautions, and roads are the main hazard given long, rough journeys.
For nomads: Antananarivo has a small nomad scene; coworking minimal and internet variable.
Education: Very low costs; limited international school availability.
Healthcare: Minimal healthcare costs; quality variable.
