Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa, obtained via Malawi's e-Visa or on arrival; many nationalities use the same options. Apply online ahead of travel for a smoother arrival.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Intercity travel uses coaches (AXA, National Bus) and shared minibuses, plus the Ilala ferry on Lake Malawi; within Lilongwe and Blantyre use minibuses and taxis, with ride-hailing limited so hotel or arranged taxis are common. Malawi drives on the left.

Car vs taxi: Self-driving works for touring Lake Malawi and the parks on the main roads (a 4x4 helps in reserves and the rains); in cities, use hotel or arranged taxis, as app coverage is thin.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The kwacha is used for cash and is essential outside hotels; cards work at some city hotels and supermarkets but acceptance is limited, and Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba mobile money are common. Carry cash and note fuel and forex shortages can occur.

SIM & data: Airtel and TNM are the two carriers; register a SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. Local eSIM support is limited, so a travel eSIM is a practical backup.

Tipping: Tipping around 10% is appreciated where no service charge applies, and lodge staff, guides and drivers are commonly tipped, especially around Lake Malawi resorts.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Known as the 'Warm Heart of Africa', Malawi is famously friendly, and unhurried greetings are expected. Use the right hand for giving and receiving, dress modestly, and show respect to elders and chiefs.

Food: Try nsima (maize staple) with relish and grilled or stewed meat, and chambo (a prized Lake Malawi tilapia). Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid tap water.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Malawi is peaceful and welcoming, with lakeside resorts and parks generally safe; petty theft occurs in the cities, and roads (plus the occasional fuel shortage) are the main practical concerns.
