Visas & entry

Indian passport holders receive a free visa on arrival for 30 days, as do virtually all nationalities, provided you hold a confirmed booking and onward ticket. The same free 30-day visa on arrival applies to most travellers worldwide.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

There is no road network between islands; you travel by seaplane, domestic flights and speedboats, plus public ferries between inhabited islands and Malé, where taxis and scooters serve the crowded capital.

Car vs taxi: Cars are irrelevant across the atolls; transfers are by seaplane or speedboat arranged through your resort, while Malé itself is walkable with cheap taxis.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) is the currency, but resorts and tourism run largely on US dollars and cards; carry some dollars for tips and local island guesthouses.

SIM & data: Buy a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo tourist SIM at Velana International Airport in Malé; most resorts also offer Wi-Fi, and data covers inhabited islands well.

Tipping: Resorts often add a 10 percent service charge; beyond that, tipping housekeeping, your butler or dive guide a few dollars is appreciated but optional.

Culture & language

Etiquette: The Maldives is a conservative Muslim country: on inhabited (non-resort) islands, dress modestly, avoid alcohol and public affection, and use designated bikini beaches; resort islands are relaxed.

Food: Try mas huni (tuna, coconut and onion) with roshi flatbread, garudhiya fish soup, and fihunu mas grilled fish; short eats (hedhikaa) and sweet black tea are staples.

Say hello: Dhivehi — “Assalaamu alaikum” · thanks “Shukuriyyaa” · how much? “Kihaavarakah?”

Safety & emergency

Resorts are very safe; on Malé and local islands watch for petty theft and respect local laws, and always heed lagoon currents and reef conditions when swimming.

Education: Limited schools; expats often send children to Sri Lanka or India.

Healthcare: Limited facilities locally; serious cases air-evacuated; private care available.
