India is a top investment and trade partner.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~152 destinations. Africa's strongest passport.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders enjoy visa-free entry to Mauritius for tourism (typically up to 60 days on arrival), reflecting close India-Mauritius ties; most other nationalities also receive visa-free or on-arrival entry. Carry proof of onward travel and accommodation.

Getting around

Intercity travel uses the extensive public bus network and the modern Metro Express light rail linking Port Louis to Curepipe; within towns use buses and taxis, with Yango and other app taxis operating on the island. Mauritius drives on the left.

Car vs taxi: Self-driving is a great way to explore Mauritius on its good roads (drive on the left, and roundabouts are common); in towns and for airport runs, taxis and app rides are convenient, so many visitors mix both.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Mauritian rupee is used for cash, but cards are very widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops across this tourism-focused island; carry some cash for buses, markets and street food. ATMs are plentiful.

SIM & data: Emtel, my.t (Mauritius Telecom) and MTML are the carriers; buy a tourist SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. eSIM options are available through some providers and via travel eSIMs.

Tipping: Tipping is not obligatory as many hotels add a service charge, but rounding up or leaving around 10% for good service is appreciated, and small tips to housekeeping and guides are welcome.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Mauritius is a warm multicultural blend of Indian, Creole, Chinese and French heritage, so respect the range of temples, mosques and churches by dressing modestly at religious sites. Greetings are friendly and English and French are widely understood.

Food: Try dholl puri (a beloved street snack), gateaux piments, rougaille, and fresh seafood, reflecting strong Indian and Creole influences. Tap water is generally treated in urban areas, but many visitors still prefer bottled water.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Mauritius is one of Africa's safest destinations and very tourist-friendly, with petty theft the main concern on beaches and in crowds; normal precautions are enough, and the sea and sun are the bigger cautions.
