Visas & entry

Indian passport holders apply through Moldova's straightforward e-visa portal (evisa.gov.md) for tourist stays; EU, UK, US and many other nationals get 90 days visa-free. Overland arrivals from Romania are routine.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Chișinău runs on trolleybuses and rutiera minibuses costing pennies; the overnight 'Prietenia' (Friendship) sleeper train links Chișinău with Bucharest, and buses fan out to Iași and beyond.

Car vs taxi: App-ordered taxis in Chișinău are abundant and very cheap, and rutieras handle the towns. Hire a car or a driver for wine-country loops to Orheiul Vechi and Purcari — roads are patchy but improving.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Moldovan lei — carry cash for markets and rural wineries, though cards are standard in Chișinău. Exchange offices cluster along Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare.

SIM & data: Orange Moldova and Moldcell offer very cheap prepaid data; from 2026 Moldova is inside the EU 'roam like at home' area, so EU SIMs now work at domestic rates — great for multi-country trips.

Tipping: 5–10% in Chișinău restaurants is appreciated, and a few places add service. Round up taxis and slip winery guides a small tip.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Wine is identity here: accept a taste when offered and toast 'Noroc!'. Romanian is the language ('Bună ziua'), and the Cricova and Mileștii Mici cellar tours must be booked ahead.

Food: Eat plăcinte (stuffed flatbreads), mămăligă polenta with brânză cheese and sarmale rolls; Mileștii Mici holds the Guinness record for the world's largest wine collection, and Purcari reds are the flagship.

Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Generally calm and welcoming, with petty theft the main urban issue. Breakaway Transnistria has its own 'border' and rules — visits happen, but register properly and keep documents handy.
