Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (12): Part of the EU customs territory through France, so EU trade agreements — including the India–EU FTA concluded in January 2026 — effectively govern goods entering Monaco. Its own economy runs on banking, property and tourism.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~175 destinations. Microstate passport; uses French Schengen visa framework.

Visas & entry

Monaco has no border controls with France, so an Indian passport holder needs a Schengen (French) visa and the stay counts within the 90/180 Schengen allowance. Visa-free Schengen nationals just roll in on the train from Nice.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

The principality is tiny and vertical: seven public lifts and escalators, the CAM bus network, and the underground Monaco–Monte-Carlo station with SNCF trains reaching Nice in about 20 minutes.

Car vs taxi: Forget a car: 2 square kilometres with scarce, expensive parking — walk, ride the public lifts and buses, or train in from Nice. Taxis are pricey and there is no Uber; book by phone or at ranks.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Euro, and almost fully card-friendly — expect Riviera prices. The Casino de Monte-Carlo charges entry and requires ID; Monégasque citizens are legally barred from gambling there.

SIM & data: Monaco Telecom runs its own network and some EU roam-like-home plans exclude it — a classic bill-shock trap when your phone latches onto 'MCO'. A French SIM (Orange or SFR) generally holds signal across the tiny territory.

Tipping: French rules apply — a 15% service charge is built into bills, so tipping is optional; round up or leave 5–10% for standout service in Monte-Carlo's restaurants.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Dress codes are real: smart attire for the casino and better restaurants, and no beachwear in town. A polite 'Bonjour' before any request goes a long way, as in France.

Food: Seek out barbagiuan — fried pastry stuffed with chard and ricotta, the national snack — plus socca and Ligurian-leaning seafood; Alain Ducasse's Le Louis XV anchors the fine-dining scene.

Say hello: French — “Bonjour” · thanks “Merci” · how much? “C'est combien?”

Safety & emergency

Arguably the safest square kilometre in Europe, blanketed in CCTV with one of the world's highest police-per-capita ratios. The main risk is to your wallet at the tables.
