Forts, wadis and mountains meeting the sea
Oman is India's newest FTA partner, on unusually generous terms: the CEPA signed in Muscat in December 2025 took effect on 1 June 2026, scrapping Omani duties on 99.4% of Indian exports by value from day one — the Sultanate's first such pact with anyone since the US in 2006. With bilateral trade near $11 billion, over 600,000 resident Indians and CEPA chapters covering 127 service sub-sectors and professional mobility, Muscat is arguably the Gulf's most India-friendly base right now.
Trade agreements (8): Oman is a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member; an India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is in advanced negotiation as of 2026, which would be India's first FTA with a GCC state.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~75 destinations. Middle Eastern passport with decent regional access.

Indian passport holders can apply online for Oman's e-visa (typically a 10-day or 30-day tourist visa); GCC residents and certain nationalities have simplified entry. Many Western nationals also use the e-visa portal, with visa-free access for a growing list of countries.

Muscat relies on Mwasalat public buses and taxis rather than a metro; orange-and-white taxis rarely use meters, so agree the fare first, while intercity Mwasalat coaches link Muscat, Nizwa, Sur and Salalah.
Car vs taxi: A rented car is ideal for exploring Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and the coast, as distances are long and public transport is thin; within Muscat, taxis or ride-hailing apps like OTAXI work fine.
Money: The Omani rial (OMR) is one of the world's strongest currencies and is divided into 1000 baisa; cards are accepted in cities but carry cash for souqs like Muttrah and rural areas.
SIM & data: Grab an Omantel or Ooredoo tourist SIM at Muscat International Airport with your passport; eSIM options and cheap data bundles are widely available.
Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; leave 10 percent at restaurants if service is not already added, and a few hundred baisa for hotel porters and drivers.
Etiquette: Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering homes and mosques, and use your right hand for eating and greetings; Ramadan daytime eating in public is discouraged.
Food: Try shuwa (slow-roasted spiced lamb), machboos rice with fish, harees, and Omani halwa, often served with kahwa (cardamom coffee) and dates.
Say hello: Arabic — “As-salamu alaykum” · thanks “Shukran” · how much? “Bikam?”
Oman is among the safest countries in the region with very low crime; the main hazards are flash floods in wadis and desert heat, so check weather before venturing out.
For nomads: Growing nomad scene in Muscat with coworking spaces and reliable infrastructure; expat-friendly with good Western amenities.
Education: Moderate costs, expat schools well-established in Muscat.
Healthcare: Modern healthcare system with government and private options.
