Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (6): Rwanda belongs to the East African Community (EAC) customs union, COMESA and the AfCFTA, and hosts strong ties with India but has no dedicated India FTA. India is a significant development and trade partner in the region.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~65 destinations. EAC member; improving access.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders can get a visa on arrival or apply through Rwanda's online e-Visa (typically 30 days), and Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival to all nationalities. It is also part of the East Africa Tourist Visa covering Kenya and Uganda.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Intercity coaches such as Volcano, Ritco and Horizon Express link Kigali to towns like Musanze and Huye; within Kigali use the clean public buses (tap with a Tap&Go card), metered taxis, and the Move and Yego ride-hailing apps, plus registered moto-taxis.

Car vs taxi: For Kigali and short hops, app taxis (Move, Yego) and moto-taxis are cheap and easy; self-driving is feasible on Rwanda's excellent tarmac roads but a driver-guide is popular for national-park trips.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Rwandan francs are used for cash, but Kigali is increasingly cashless with cards and, above all, MTN Mobile Money accepted almost everywhere. Cards work at hotels and larger shops; carry some cash for markets and rural areas.

SIM & data: MTN Rwanda and Airtel are the main carriers; buy and register a SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. eSIM availability is limited locally, so a regional travel eSIM is a good backup.

Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; leave around 5–10% at restaurants that don't add a service charge, and tip gorilla-trekking guides, trackers and porters generously as it is expected in the tourism sector.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Rwanda is famously orderly and clean, and plastic bags are banned, so don't bring them in. Greetings are important and unhurried, and the last Saturday morning of each month is Umuganda community clean-up when many businesses open late.

Food: Sample brochettes (grilled skewers), grilled tilapia from Lake Kivu, and the ubiquitous buffet 'melange' of beans, plantain and cassava. Tap water is not reliably safe, so stick to bottled or treated water.

Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Rwanda is one of Africa's safest and most orderly countries, with low crime and a strong police presence in Kigali; normal precautions suffice, and take a guide for volcano and forest treks.
