Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (5): Saint Lucia trades mainly through CARICOM and has preferential access via the UK's Economic Partnership Agreement and CBI/CARIFORUM-EU arrangements; India has no bilateral FTA with Saint Lucia, so trade remains minor and duty treatment follows CARICOM's common external tariff.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~149 destinations. Strong Caribbean & Commonwealth access.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa in advance for Saint Lucia, typically valid for stays up to 90 days; most other nationalities including UK, US, EU, and Canadian citizens receive visa-free entry for up to 42-90 days depending on nationality.

Getting around

Minibuses (privately run, marked with route numbers) connect Castries, Rodney Bay, and Soufriere cheaply, while taxis are the default for airport transfers and evening travel since buses stop early.

Car vs taxi: Renting a car requires a temporary local driving permit (purchased on arrival) and confidence with left-hand drive on winding coastal roads; most short-stay visitors find taxis or organized tours more relaxing given the mountainous, narrow routes to Soufriere.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The East Caribbean dollar (XCD) is pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, though change often comes back in EC dollars, so carrying some local currency avoids poor exchange rates.

SIM & data: Digicel and Flow are the two main providers with kiosks at Hewanorra and George F. L. Charles airports; a tourist SIM with data lasts most of a week-long stay and works well for hiking the Pitons or island-hopping by ferry.

Tipping: A 10% service charge is usually added to restaurant bills, so extra tipping is optional; if service is exceptional, rounding up or leaving 5-10% more is appreciated, especially for tour guides and drivers.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greeting with 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' before starting any conversation, even with shopkeepers or taxi drivers, is expected and its omission can come across as rude.

Food: Saint Lucia's national dish is green fig and saltfish (boiled green bananas with salted cod), and Friday night street food at the Gros Islet or Anse La Raye fish fry is a local institution.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Generally safe for tourists who stick to resort areas and Castries by day, though petty theft occurs and solo travelers should avoid isolated beaches after dark.
