Pack ice stretched to every horizon, broken by leads of water so dark they looked painted on. A leopard seal surfaced once beside our Zodiac, assessed us with an unhurried eye, and slid back under. Shackleton's Endurance sank somewhere beneath that same ice, and I felt its absence the whole afternoon.
