Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (2): South Sudan has recently joined AfCFTA and has pending IGAD regional integration; India has no bilateral FTA with South Sudan, so bilateral trade remains modest and tariff-based.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~35 destinations. Weakest in group; post-conflict state limits access.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders must obtain a visa in advance from a South Sudanese embassy or via an approved e-visa process; tourist entry is generally restricted and short-stay permits are typically limited to around 30 days.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Getting around

Shared minibuses and motorbike taxis (boda-bodas) serve Juba; road travel between towns is difficult and often impassable in the rainy season, so domestic flights are commonly used.

Car vs taxi: Hired vehicles with drivers are strongly preferred over self-driving given poor roads, security checkpoints, and unclear signage across the country.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: South Sudanese pound (SSP) is legal tender but the US dollar is widely used and preferred for larger transactions; cash is essential as card infrastructure is minimal.

SIM & data: Zain, MTN, or Digitel SIMs are available in Juba with passport registration; network coverage is limited mainly to Juba and a few other towns.

Tipping: Not a strong local custom, but rounding up for hotel staff and drivers in Juba is a welcome gesture given the difficult economic conditions.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greetings are important and unhurried; ask about family and wellbeing before discussing business, and dress modestly, especially outside Juba.

Food: Try kisra (sorghum flatbread) with a meat or okra stew, and ful (fava bean stew), staples shared with neighboring Sudan.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Exercise a high degree of caution: parts of the country face ongoing conflict and instability, so most governments advise against all but essential travel; stick to secure areas in Juba and travel with local guidance.
