The journal

I learned to eat dinner at ten and mean it, sitting at a bar in La Latina where the jamón hung from the ceiling like punctuation. A stranger beside me kept translating the bartender's jokes until we were both laughing too hard to finish our vermouth. Madrid runs on that kind of easy, borrowed warmth.
