The journal

I didn't summit — altitude sickness turned me back at Horombo Hut — and I've made peace with that. What I remember instead is a porter named Emmanuel singing softly to himself on the trail, and waking at 4 a.m. to a sky so thick with stars it looked artificially arranged.
