Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (8): A CARICOM/CSME heavyweight under the CARIFORUM–EU and UK EPAs, plus partial-scope deals with Venezuela, Panama, Cuba and Costa Rica; its LNG, ammonia and methanol exports interest Indian buyers, and the 1845 Fatel Razack indenture link keeps ties with India uniquely close. No India FTA yet.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~148 destinations. Strong Caribbean & Commonwealth access; good global reach.

Getting around

Colour-banded maxi-taxis rule the roads — red band for the East–West corridor, green heading south — alongside 'H'-plate route taxis and PTSC buses; the APT James fast ferry and the cheap Caribbean Airlines air bridge link Trinidad with Tobago.

Car vs taxi: Maxi-taxis and route taxis are dirt-cheap but confusing at first — locals will happily orient you; driving is on the left with heavy Port of Spain congestion. A rental makes far more sense on laid-back Tobago than in Trinidad.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: TT dollars; US dollars can be scarce at banks thanks to forex controls, so cards are handy. ATMs are plentiful in Port of Spain and Scarborough.

SIM & data: Digicel and bmobile sell prepaid SIMs at Piarco airport and in malls; coverage is strong on both islands.

Tipping: 10% where no service charge is added; round up for maxi-taxi drivers. Keep small bills handy during Carnival season.

Culture & language

Etiquette: 'Liming' — the art of hanging out — is the national pastime; with roughly 40% of the population of Indian descent, Diwali and Phagwa are full public celebrations, and Indian visitors often feel instantly at home.

Food: Doubles — curried channa between soft bara flatbreads — are the iconic street breakfast, a direct Indian inheritance; add buss-up-shut roti, bake and shark at Maracas Bay, callaloo and pelau. Angostura bitters is made here.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Port of Spain's crime is serious (a state of emergency was imposed over 2024–25) — avoid Laventille and Beetham, and use registered taxis at night; Tobago is far calmer. Carnival itself is heavily policed and generally fine.
