Getting around

Tashkent has a beautiful, expanding metro (some stations are ornate landmarks), plus the fast Afrosiyob high-speed train linking Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara; Yandex Go handles ride-hailing.

Car vs taxi: The high-speed Afrosiyob train is the best way between the Silk Road cities; within Tashkent, the Yandex Go app is cheap, and a driver suits rural excursions.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Uzbekistani som (UZS) comes in large denominations; cards are increasingly accepted in cities, but carry cash for bazaars like Chorsu and smaller towns.

SIM & data: Buy a Beeline, Ucell (Mobiuz) or Uzmobile SIM at Tashkent Airport or in shops with your passport; data has become far cheaper in recent years.

Tipping: Tipping is not traditional but increasingly welcome; a 10 percent service charge appears in tourist restaurants, and small tips please guides and drivers.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Uzbeks are hospitable; remove shoes in homes, dress modestly at the mosques and madrasas of Samarkand and Bukhara, and accept the customary bread and tea.

Food: Plov (osh) is the national dish, cooked in a kazan; also try samsa, lagman noodles, shashlik, non bread and green tea.

Say hello: Uzbek — “Salom” · thanks “Rahmat” · how much? “Qancha?”

Safety & emergency

Uzbekistan is very safe for tourists with low crime and a strong tourism push; the main issues are heat and long distances, easily managed by rail.
