The journal

I had a shirt tailored in an afternoon by a woman who measured me twice and argued with her assistant the whole time, good-naturedly, in Vietnamese I couldn't follow. That evening the river turned gold with paper lanterns, and I wore the shirt to dinner still smelling faintly of new fabric.
