The journal

In a San Telmo café at midnight, an old porteño told me tango was invented by men waiting for something — a ship, a woman, a better life. I watched two dancers practice in near silence on the cobblestones outside, their feet doing all the talking. Buenos Aires felt like Europe with its collar loosened.
