The journal

Salta's colonial plaza looked postcard-perfect until a sudden downpour sent everyone scrambling under the same narrow awning, strangers pressed shoulder to shoulder, laughing at the absurdity of it. Later I climbed the hills above town for empanadas so good I ordered them twice, watching the light turn the surrounding mountains a deep rust red.
