The journal

Sucre's whitewashed walls held the afternoon heat so well that shopkeepers hosed down their doorsteps to cool the air, a small daily ritual I hadn't expected. I sat in the Plaza 25 de Mayo eating a salteña, careful not to spill the broth, while shoeshine boys negotiated territory with more seriousness than diplomats.
