The journal

São Paulo doesn't perform for visitors the way other cities do — it just keeps working, sprawling past the horizon in every direction. I found my favorite hours in a cramped Bela Vista trattoria, where the owner argued with his son in Italian-accented Portuguese while I ate the best pastel of my life.
