The journal

The humidity in Manaus hit me before I'd even cleared the airport, thick and green-smelling. I took a boat out where the Rio Negro meets the Solimões, watching two rivers refuse to mix for miles, dark water beside pale. My guide cut the engine so we could just listen to the forest breathe for a while.
