I remember the hum of St. Lawrence Market before the stalls fully opened, peameal bacon sizzling while vendors called out in half a dozen accents. A stranger on the streetcar recommended an Ethiopian place on the Danforth without me asking. The city seemed to introduce itself in pieces, generously.
