I'd braced for the pyramids to feel smaller than expected, the way famous things often do, but standing at the base of Khufu's tomb did the opposite. A camel handler named Mahmoud negotiated with theatrical outrage over a five-minute ride, then quietly pointed out where the desert met the edge of the city like a seam.
