The journal

Cairo hit me first as sound — car horns, a muezzin's call, a radio playing Umm Kulthum from a coffee stand — before I'd even checked into my hotel. I ate koshari standing up at a counter near Tahrir Square, the vendor layering rice and lentils and crispy onions with the speed of long habit.
