The journal

We crossed the Nile before sunrise to beat the heat at the Valley of the Kings, and the boatman cut the engine halfway so we'd drift the last stretch in silence. The tomb paintings inside were more vivid than I expected — blues and golds that three thousand years hadn't managed to dull.
