The journal

The Duomo's dome dominates every photograph, but I remember Florence for its quiet: an early walk across Ponte Vecchio before the jewelers opened, just the river and a street sweeper working in long, unhurried strokes. I bought a leather notebook I still write in, from a stall that smelled of tannin and dust.
