The journal

I stayed near Campo de' Fiori and woke each morning to the market vendors shouting prices before seven. What stayed with me wasn't the Colosseum but a trattoria owner who redrew my whole itinerary on a napkin, insisting I skip a museum for his cousin's carbonara instead. I went. He was right.
