The journal

We parked at a floodlit waterhole after dark and simply waited, engine off, thermos of coffee going cold between us. A parade of rhinos arrived first, then elephants, moving with a caution that suggested they'd learned the hard way to be careful, even here.

Premier floodlit viewing platform where lions, elephants, and endangered black rhinos drink through the day. Best: May–Sep

Halali Waterhole · Waterhole

Central park waterhole attracting diverse wildlife including elephants, rhinos, and predator congregations. Best: May–Sep

Namutoni Fort · Historical Fort

Colonial-era fortress turned rest camp, original police outpost overlooking etosha pan. Best: May–Sep
