The journal

The lagoon was pink with flamingos when I arrived, thousands of them wading in formation like they'd rehearsed it. A local fisherman took me out to see the seal colony at Pelican Point, and the smell hit before the sound did — a briny, honking chaos I still think about fondly.

Stunning sand dune rising 383 meters near Walvis Bay, offering desert vistas and scenic hiking. Best: May–Sep

Pelican Point · Wildlife Reserve

Peninsula sanctuary for seals, flamingos, and marine birds in pristine lagoon habitat. Best: Jun–Oct
