The journal

Madang's coastline curved so gently that locals called it the prettiest town in the Pacific, and paddling past reef-fringed islets at sunset, I didn't feel like arguing. A market vendor pressed a bilum bag into my hands as a gift, waving off payment, insisting I'd remember Madang by it. I do.
