The journal

Ash from Tavurvur still dusted the windowsills when I visited, a live reminder that this town rebuilt itself practically in the volcano's shadow. A guide showed me tunnels carved by Japanese forces during the war, cool and silent, then walked me to a beach where black sand met impossibly blue water.
