The journal

The white volcanic stone of Arequipa's buildings glowed almost pink at sunset, and I remember tracing my hand along a wall near the Santa Catalina monastery, warm from the day's sun. A waiter told me the city had survived a dozen earthquakes standing on that same stone. I believed him without needing proof.
